Back in the Rust Belt

ARC Raiders, March to now. What changed while the lobby was away.

If you stopped playing around March, you left right before the game moved. There's a new map, three machines you've never seen, a weapon durability rework, and matchmaking that now sorts you by how you actually play. The things most likely to kill you are your own old habits, not the new enemies.

The Five-Minute Catch-Up

  1. The floating drill is the ARC Turbine. It will not attack you first. Walk past it unless the whole squad is committing.
  2. Photoelectric Cloak got heavy. Weight went 1 to 3 and never came back. Re-check your loadout weight before you drop.
  3. Cheap guns are disposable now. Commons burn durability 75% faster per shot. Save the good gun for the fight that matters.
  4. Snitches call in a Rocketeer. Kill them faster than you used to, or bring the anti-air.
  5. Sign up for the 5th Expedition, Sept 8 to Sept 29. No grace period this time, and it's the last one until 2027.

Everything below is the why, plus the machines.

Jump to The Turbine New ARC Old ARC Gear Riven Tides Matchmaking Calendar Vote

1. The sky drill: it's the ARC Turbine

Added April 28 with Riven Tides. Cone-shaped, drifts in overhead, flips to slow itself, deploys legs and lands. Embark's own designer calls it "defensive by design, dangerous when provoked."

It will not start the fight

The Turbine scans for a landing spot and actively tries to land away from threats. You can loot around it, walk past it, and leave it alone. Nobody has to die to this thing.

Somebody shot it

That's the whole story of your first encounter. One person pings it with a rifle and the entire squad is now in a fight it did not plan for, in the open.

What it does once you provoke it

  • Cluster missiles that trigger a lightning strike on impact. Heavy damage plus a stun, roughly a Hornet stun or a natural lightning hit.
  • Proximity mine fields sprayed on the ground beneath it. This is what punishes anyone who charges in close.
  • It hunts you behind cover. The official guide is explicit that the electrical attacks seek out Raiders using the environment as cover. Ducking behind a wall is not the answer here.
  • It burns you if you climb on it. Don't try to ride it.

Where to shoot it

The spinning yellow tanks in the turbine section. They're only visible through the gaps the deployed landing gear leaves, and only while it's on the ground. Shooting the armor anywhere else does close to nothing.

It can still fire cluster lightning while landed, so don't relax the second it touches down.

Verify Community wiki puts it around 4,000 HP with Heavy armor. That number is not in any Embark patch note. Treat it as a ballpark.

How to actually take one

Embark's published tips: pick an open location, approach slowly, coordinate as a group, and pack traversal gear plus Adrenaline Shots. That's the official list and it's short on specifics because the fight is meant to be a squad problem.

The community answer is a Jupiter (legendary energy sniper, pierces ARC armor) from roughly 150 to 200m, outside the lightning's reach. That works on paper and it's what the wiki recommends.

Verify The 150 to 200m range band is community-sourced, not Embark. Somebody in the crew should test the actual reach of the lightning before we build a plan on it.

What you get

A unique Turbine Compressor plus top-tier ARC materials. The in-game codex calls them some of the rarest materials found outside a Harvester.

The payout got better while we were gone. On July 7 Embark "significantly increased the value of loot dropped by ARC Turbines," with a dev note conceding the loot was too low for the effort required. So the risk math is friendlier now than it was at launch.

Is it worth fighting, honestly

Embark never says yes or no. The nearest thing to an official signal is that they raised the loot after players complained the effort was not worth it, which tells you the effort is high and they know it.

Practical read for a group our size: it's a scheduled objective, not an opportunistic one. If four of you are healthy, have ammo, and nobody else is nearby, it's a good payday. If you're already low, mid-rotation, or there's another squad on the map, walk past. It is genuinely happy to be ignored, which is rare in this game.

One open bug as of the last patch: Leapers can jump through the Turbine. If a Leaper joins the fight, expect the geometry to behave strangely.

2. Three machines that weren't here in March

All three arrived within a month of when the crew stopped playing, so odds are nobody has seen them properly.

Vaporizer

Flying laser platform, arrived March 31 with Flashpoint. Erratic movement, three attacks: a delayed single-target lock, a dragged ground laser that leaves fire behind, and a multi-target barrage.

The one habit that saves you: break line of sight the instant you see the lock-on. The delay before it fires is the window.

Verify Community guides say the weak point is the eight corner rotors, then the belly core once it's grounded. Embark has not published a weak point for this one. Test it before you commit ammo to a theory.

ARC Assessor

Large stationary probe, arrived March 31. It lands during the Close Scrutiny map condition, deploys scanning gear, and does not chase you. The threat is the heavy patrol escort it brings, Vaporizers included.

Close Scrutiny also strips loot value from the rest of the map and concentrates it on the Assessor. So during that condition the map is a lockdown puzzle, not a normal looting run.

Free Loadout is disabled on Close Scrutiny and Night Raid. You bring your own kit or you don't go.

ARC Turbine

Covered above. Newest machine in the game right now, and it stays that way until October 8.

Live event, unresolved

Erratic Wasps. Right now there are Wasps flying strangely, making noises they shouldn't, carrying unidentified tech and swarming toward a location. That's the "Phantom Targets" event arc running across the August patches. It is a story lead-in to October, not a confirmed permanent enemy type. Don't build habits around it yet.

3. Old ARC: what changed on the machines you know

This is the section that gets a returning player killed. Nothing here is a new enemy. It's the same enemies behaving differently than they did in March.

MachinePatchWhat changed
All ARC Mar 31 They identify a player standing close in front of them faster than before. Your old crouch-peek timing is tighter now.
Snitch Aug 18 Can now call in a Rocketeer, or a Firefly and Hornet duo, on top of the old swarm. Snitch Scanners are explicitly unaffected. Kill the Snitch before the transmission finishes.
Rocketeer Mar 31 / Jun 16 No longer instantly dies from stun-then-collision, and takes less crash damage. Multi-missile volleys spread wider so they stop stacking on one spot. Drops Launcher Ammo instead of Heavy Ammo.
Queen and Matriarch Jun 16 / Aug 18 Plant their feet on more varied and moving terrain, so old terrain positioning is less exploitable. Their stomp was hitting through walls and from too far away; that was fixed August 18.
Bastion, Bombardier,
Queen, Matriarch
Apr 28 Controller aim assist was not correctly targeting their leg joints and weak spots. It is now. If your muscle memory on these four feels off, it's because you learned it against a broken assist.
Firefly Jun 16 Fire application matches the visual more closely. Briefly grazing the flame is less punishing than it was.
Firefly and Comet Apr 28 Density went down, not up. Comets removed from standard Dam Battlegrounds entirely, Firefly presence heavily reduced there, Comets reduced in Buried City. Embark said the launch spawns made beginner sessions too hard. Don't over-correct for enemies that are now rarer.
Shredder Mar 31 Spread from Stella Montis to every map. Close-quarters pellet bursts. Corridors are worse than they used to be.
Tick Jun 16 If a Tick grabs you while you're carrying an item, you can now drop the item and fight back. That used to be a forced loss.
General ARC vision Jun 16 Better granularity through bushes and smoke. Sitting at the edge of cover is easier to spot. Being genuinely deep in cover or smoke is now harder for them to see. Commit to concealment or don't bother.
General ARC hearing Jun 16 Better outdoors, less sensitive indoors and through geometry. They also react to nearby breaching sounds now.

Only behavior changes are listed. Cosmetic and visual bug fixes are omitted.

4. Gear and economy: check your loadout before you drop

The durability rework is the biggest change to how a raid feels. It changes what you bring and when you shoot.

Weapon durability, reworked twice

ChangeNow
Average durability, ground-spawn weapons30 (was 50)
Average durability, locked-room weaponsaround 60
Durability loss per shot, Common+75%
Durability loss per shot, Uncommon+50%
Durability loss per shot, Rare+35%
Durability loss per shot, Epic−5%
Durability loss per shot, Legendary−10%
Upgrading a weaponalso repairs 25% of max durability
Durability lost when you get knocked out15% (was 30%)

Net effect: floor-loot guns are throwaway, good guns last longer than they ever did, and getting knocked costs you half what it used to. Embark said out loud they want heavy PvP to be viable, and this is how they paid for it.

Photoelectric Cloak is a different item

WhenWeightPower drain
Before April12.5 per second
April 28310 per second
May 19 to now35 per second

Current: weight 3, drain 5 a second. The weight was never reverted. If the Cloak was your standard panic button, it now costs three times the carry weight and burns power twice as fast as you remember.

The upside, added August 18: it now works against Turbine lightning attacks and Matriarch missiles, which implies it didn't reliably before.

New weapons and gear

  • Rascal. Grenade launcher. Light, compact, slow reload, a bit unpredictable on aim. Anti-armor sidearm alternative to the Hullcracker.
  • Dolabra. Legendary energy shotgun with variable focus, wide burst or a focused electric funnel. Best found during Close Scrutiny.
  • Canto. Close-quarters SMG on medium ammo.
  • Surge Coil. Deployable that periodically electrifies its surroundings.
  • Powered Descender and Crash Mat. Fall mitigation, which matters a lot on the new map.
  • Dockmaster's Detector. The tool for Beachcombing on Riven Tides.
Smaller balance changes worth knowing

Bettina got buffed twice. Base damage 14 to 16, dispersion cut roughly 40% per shot, recovery about 30% faster, and about 33% more damage against ARC armor. Fire rate landed at 250 after a couple of passes.

Trigger 'Nade spam is dead. You can no longer throw a new grenade while triggering the previous one, and there are short delays on both actions now.

Heavy Ammo stacks to 60 instead of 40. Vaporizer Regulator stacks to 3 instead of 1.

Extended Barrel is now a three-tier mod. Top tier gives 30% bullet velocity and 15% more falloff distance.

Tactical Mk.3 (Healing) is now an area heal, 45 instead of 20, on a 45 second cooldown instead of 30. It heals allies after a revive, and it heals enemies too if you're careless with placement.

Weapons on the ground now display their installed mods, so you can judge a pickup without picking it up.

5. Riven Tides, the map you've never played

Live April 28. Western coast of the Rust Belt. Two anchors and one killzone between them.

The three zones

  • Panorama Azzurro. Abandoned luxury hotel. Rooftop bar, pool, a water slide running from the hillside down to the beach. Interior, close quarters, heavy prop cover.
  • Exodus dockyard. Cranes, shipping containers, sea wall, wrecked ships. Industrial and vertical, with a lot of places to disappear. Embark's own scout report flags it as a Raider magnet.
  • The beachfront between them. Called out by name as too open and too low. Do not cross it in a straight line.

Beachcombing

Riven Tides has its own minor map condition. Sweep the sand with the Dockmaster's Detector for buried loot. The richest spots are out in the open, which is the entire design of the thing. Somebody watches while somebody digs.

6. Matchmaking now sorts you by how you play

This matters more for a ten-man group than for a solo, because we rotate squads and the system tracks each of us separately.

How it works, in plain terms

  • Your playstyle sits on a continuous scale from consistently cooperative to highly PvP-engaged. There are no friendly-only or aggressive-only buckets, and there are no PvE servers. You can always be attacked.
  • Solo, duo and trio are tracked separately. Your friendly solo behavior no longer bleeds into your aggressive trio bucket, or the other way round.
  • One kill does not flag you. It reads patterns over time.
  • Loadout value, end-of-round surveys, and looting downed players have no effect on matchmaking. Embark said all three directly.

The one rule with teeth

Self-defense is being tested at zero weight toward your aggression score, including knocking out someone who shot first. Whichever squad gets damaged, downed or knocked first is the defender.

Third-partying an existing fight counts as starting a fight. If two squads are already trading and we roll in, that's on us, not on them.

Still a live test as of the last patch, not confirmed permanent.

7. Dates that matter

Two of these have hard deadlines. The rest is just knowing what's coming.

DateWhatWhy you care
Sept 8 to Sept 29 5th Expedition sign-up Hard deadline. No "Last Call" grace period this cycle. Miss the window and you miss departure. This is the last Expedition until early 2027, and finishing all five fully unlocks the Zenith Outfit. Rewards include +12 stash space, capping the stash bonus at 60.
Sept 22 Trials Season 5 ends Then Trials pause for two weeks. If you want the Scorta reward track, that's your clock.
Oct 8 Frozen Trail Biggest update since launch. Largest map in the game, a frozen mountain settlement with heavy verticality above and below ground. New ARC types, one small and agile and one very large. New hub called the Outpost, reworked skill tree and Raider Decks, new weapons. Full reveal in September.
Ongoing Update cadence Monthly updates ended in May. Two big content drops a year now, with live updates for balance and bugs in between. Frozen Trail is the first one under the new model.
The rest of the Expedition mechanics, if you're chasing them

The order of operations: complete the Caravan any time between windows, wait for the window, sign up (that's a separate step from finishing the Caravan), complete an in-window challenge for rewards, then depart on Sept 29.

New this cycle: you can opt out of the quest reset and keep quest-line progress instead of losing it on departure. The departure window is three weeks instead of two.

Bonus skill points from Expeditions cap at 15 total, with catch-up of up to 5 per Expedition available from your second one onward.

Consecutive-completion buffs (XP boost, Scrappy materials boost, repair value) stack to three levels. Missing a window doesn't erase what you have, it just stops the stack growing.

During the 2027 pause: buffs you've earned persist. Caravans reset, and partial Caravan progress converts to Ermal Vouchers of equal value.

Ermal is the new trader, unlocking at Level 25. Rotating blueprints and tokens, plus two paid perks: extra stash space, and an Expedition Vault of up to 5 slots that survives a departure.

Lobby vote: what do we do with a Turbine?

Worth settling before somebody shoots one mid-rotation again.

The squad rolls up on a landed Turbine. What's the call?
